Pat Toomey appears to believe he needs split-ticket voters to win re-election.
His latest re-election ad, titled “What It’s About”, features several examples of him receiving praise from Democrats.

“Campaigns can be tough,” Toomey begins. “But in the end, it’s not about who yells and screams the loudest.”
“Ed Rendell called Pat Toomey ‘a man of uncommon decency,’” a narrator adds.
“It’s about a better future for our children,” Toomey continues.
“Tim Kaine praised Pat Toomey’s ‘seriousness, intellect and civility,’” the narrator contributes.
“It’s about helping police keeping our communities safe, keeping guns away from criminals, strengthening our economy so everyone can earn a good living,” Toomey concludes while an on-air graphic notes his endorsement from gun safety advocate and former Democratic Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.
Altogether, the thirty-second spot includes the names of three prominent Democrats. In fact, judging solely from this commercial it would be difficult for a low-information voter to discern that Toomey is the Republican candidate. At a time when Clinton is heavily favored in Pennsylvania, that is likely not an accident.
UPDATE: Tim Kaine’s spokesman Amy Dudley is responding to Toomey’s ad:
“Senator Kaine is proud to support Katie McGinty, who has campaigned with him and Hillary Clinton across Pennsylvania. The progressive, results-oriented leader Pennsylvania needs in the Senate, McGinty will help Kaine and Clinton create an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top. It’s understandable Pat Toomey would want to distance himself from Donald Trump, but this trick isn’t going to work.”
