Pennsylvania State Senator Introduces Bill to Allow School Staff to Carry Gun :: 07/30/2022

Pennsylvania State Senator Doug Mastriano, who is also a Republican candidate for Pennsylvania governor, introduced Senate Bill 1288, which would allow school staff to possess a firearm or other lawful weapons on school grounds.

An employee would need to request a certification from the administration of the school district they work in. The school district SHALL issue the certification if they meet the following requirements:

Valid proof of employment within the school district

Provides a current 2″ x 2″ photo

Proof of a valid Pennsylvania concealed carry permit

Certification of the required course that consists of 15 to 30 hours of instruction (more details on the course can be read in the full bill here)

Demonstrate hands-on safety and proficiency with the firearm or weapon they will be carrying

Mastriano’s office also released the following statement:

“It’s important to note that Senate Bill 1288 would not be a mandate on schools or the staff but would give school staff the ability to be a last line of defense if they choose to go through the certification process.”

There are currently 29 states that allow school employees to carry firearms on school grounds.
