A car burglary suspect is dead and Broward Sheriff’s detectives say they are investigating whether the Tamarac resident who shot him will face charges or whether this was a case of self-defense.
“The state attorney’s office will ultimately determine whether charges should be filed,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said at the shooting scene Saturday morning.
Frank Johnston, 64, was walking his dog when he saw Walder Jean Saintelus, 22, also of Tamarac, walking between parked cars and checking the door handles to see if any were unlocked, Concepcion said.
Johnston went back home with his dog and watched as Saintelus walked toward Johnston’s home and car in the 9100 block of Northwest 82nd Street, she said.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call about 5:15 a.m. to report car burglaries in progress, she said.
“[Johnston] came outside the home armed and confronted the subject,” Concepcion said. “There was an altercation between the two and [Johnston] fired.”
Concepcion said she did not know whether Saintelus was carrying a weapon.
Saintelus was taken to Broward Health North medical center where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives were canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and security camera video.
“We have found a number of residents whose vehicles had been burglarized,” Concepcion said. “[Saintelus] was found to be in possession of some stolen property that he retrieved from some of those vehicles.”
Neighbor Greg Reid was surprised to wake up and find Broward Sheriff’s patrol cars lining his street.
“People are getting killed in my neighborhood, getting shot, walking around burglarizing homes,” he said. “It’s scary.”
Concepcion said records show Santelus had a history of committing burglaries.
