One Memphis woman took matters into her own hands when she caught someone trying to break into her home.
Police say it happened in the 3500 block of Carnes Avenue in the U of M area.
She says she’s so angry that this man tried to break into her house that she wasn't even scared. And while she's gotten criticism for what she did, her actions are helping police.
"He's lucky my kid wasn't here or he wouldn't be walking."
We're not showing her face or sharing her name because she and her family are scared of retaliation. She says she was cooking breakfast when it happened.
"I noticed him with the screen door open and trying to like jiggle the handle on the door like the wooden one. I was like, what the F are you doing? He was like, oh, I'm looking for my friend Chris. I'm like, you just walk in people's backyard looking for your friend Chris?"
She then did something most people wouldn't do. She chased the suspect down the street, stopped him and told him to say cheese.
"What was going through my mind was, I'm getting a picture of this guy. I'm about to make him famous. That's exactly what was going on in my mind, and he's not getting into my damn house."
Turns out, Memphis police believe this man may be responsible for a rash of burglaries in the area.
"They make an attempt to see if anybody's home. Nobody comes to the door. And when the homeowner comes to home, the back door's been kicked in," said the victim’s stepfather.
Donna Snow walks in the neighborhood regularly and says she's always aware of her surroundings.
"It really is a nice area, so I have no complaints. I do also know there's a lot of crime,” said Snow.
While the suspect is still out there, the victim and her family say they'll be more vigilant. They also have a message for him.
"You're very brave, very brave. I know a lot of the people in this neighborhood and a lot of people are armed and ready to use self defense."
