Washington Self-Defense: Yakima homeowner catches 3 prowlers in 2 incidents :: 08/20/2015

A homeowner held two burglars and a trespasser at gunpoint in two separate incidents within hours of one another over the weekend, Yakima police said.

The first incident took place about 5 p.m. Saturday, when the man and his girlfriend discovered clothing, electronics and cellphones had been taken from his home in the 1300 block of Roosevelt Avenue. As they were absorbing being burglarized, they heard the back door opening and encountered two men, including a 24-year-old man wearing a hat, necklace and shirt stolen from the home, according to a police affidavit.

Police said they arrived to find the two men being held on the ground at gunpoint by the homeowner, who held a valid concealed pistol license.

Police also found a stolen car outside the house, which they tied to the suspected burglars.

Two hours later, police were again summoned to the house, where the homeowner was holding a 34-year-old man at gunpoint.

The homeowner said he had just dropped off his girlfriend and returned to find a man in his yard looking in the windows of his house.

According to the homeowner, the man said he was just cutting across the yard, which the homeowner noted is completely fenced, the affidavit said.

All three suspects appeared in Yakima County Superior Court on Monday.

Bail was set at $20,000 for one of the suspected burglars — the one alleged to have been wearing the stolen clothing. He faces possible charges of possessing a stolen motor vehicle, burglary, theft, possession of another’s identification and driving with a suspended license.

The other burglary suspect, a 31-year-old Union Gap man, is being held in lieu of $15,000 bail on
suspicion of residential burglary and third-degree theft.

Bail was set at $10,000 for the third man, who in addition to facing possible criminal trespass charges is being held on suspicion of methamphetamine possession and drug paraphernalia.
