Washington Self-Defense: Police: Covington woman shoots ex-husband in self-defense :: 05/28/2015

COVINGTON, Wash. - A woman shot her ex-husband overnight, but investigators say it appears to be a case of self-defense and the woman was not arrested.

The incident unfolded shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday as officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 29800 block of SE Kent-Black Diamond Road.

A 48-year-old man was found at the scene with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with non-life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation found that the man and his 46-year-old ex-wife got into a verbal altercation during an attempt to get back together.

The argument escalated into a physical fight, and the woman armed herself with a handgun. When the man came at the woman, she shot him in the left hip, police said.

The woman then ran to a neighbor's residence and called 911.

Police arrived and initially placed the woman under arrest, but she was released after investigators determined that she had fired the weapon in self-defense.
