Virginia Self-Defense: Homeowner shoots suspected burglar in Hampton :: 08/16/2017

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Police say a man is recovering in the hospital after he allegedly broke into a Hampton residence and was subsequently shot by the homeowner.

Police were called to the 1st block of Kilverstone Way shortly before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, officers found a 22-year-old Newport News man suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say the man had forced his way into the home and began rummaging throughout the residence.  The homeowner, who was armed with a gun, was awakened by the alarm and responded to the area in question.

The suspect allegedly charged at the victim, who then shot the suspect one time.  Police say no charges are being sought against the homeowner.

The identity of the suspect is being withheld until he is formally charged.
