Utah Self-Defense: Alleged knife-wielding home intruder shot by resident in Utah :: 07/15/2019

LEHI — An alleged intruder was shot and injured Saturday night after breaking into a home in Lehi, police said.

About 8:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to 391 N. 900 East on the report of a burglary in progress, according to a statement from Lehi police. The 20-year-old man had gotten into the second-level apartment and "was armed with a knife," Lehi Police Sgt. Robert Marshall said.

The home renter, also in his 20s, shot the man, Marshall said. He is not likely to face charges in the shooting.

While officers were on the way to the house, dispatchers told them a 20-year-old man had been trespassing at the house earlier, had returned and was trying to break in, according to the statement.

The officers got to the home and discovered the man with multiple gunshot wounds — at least two in his legs and one in his stomach. He was taken to Intermountain Medical Center for treatment.

Police on Sunday did not know why the man was trying to get into the house.

"I think it was probably random," Marshall said, though officers were waiting to interview the man for more details.

As of late Sunday morning, the man remained hospitalized with serious injuries but was expected to survive. He is expected to be arrested after he is released from the hospital, police said.

There was no known relationship between the alleged intruder and residents in the home, Marshall said.
