The single most “life changing” event I have experienced to date was the birth of my son. Any parent will likely echo a similar sentiment. Our children are a chance to better the world, carry on family traditions, and leave a legacy for generations to follow. We protect, nurture, mentor, and guide them to be better versions of ourselves.
We teach our kids how to feed themselves, care for themselves, read, write, think critically, honor elders, respect the flag, worship God, stand up for themselves, be kind, patient, forgiving, enterprising, self-sufficient, creative, and free thinking.
When is the right time to teach our kids about the 2nd Amendment?
The answer to that question is likely different for each parent but it is one that ALL parents should address.
Most parents would agree that we should not leave it to the television, Hollywood, the school bus, the school, and outside influences to teach our kids about the “birds and bees”. This is an important discussion about creating life. Mom and Dad know best when and how to address this topic with their child. With this said, why would we leave it to television, Hollywood, the school bus, the school, and outside influences to teach our kids about the 2nd Amendment, which is after all about protecting life.
We have the “birds and bees” discussion when we recognize our kid are beginning to show an interest in such thing. We might have the “talk” when we notice that their friends are showing an interest in such things. We must have the talk when our child straight out asks “the question”.
Unlike the “birds and bees”, some children have been around firearms as long as they can remember. So long as Mom and Dad are promoting safe responsible gun ownership, they will likely see firearms as a normal part of life.
Other Children, however, are around firearms and don’t even know it. For whatever reason, the parents have chosen to keep it from the kids. Will kids ultimately find the firearm(s)? Will one of the child’s friends ultimately find the firearm(s)… it is quite possible. Will the “taboo” make them more curious?
Educate NOT isolate!
I have provided a list of articles and books that can guide and help parents with having their “birds and bees” talk about firearms.
Empower your child with knowledge and respect for firearms for they may someday exercise their 2nd Amendment and arm themselves to protect your grandchildren.
Stay armed and BE well regulated!
