It was nearing midnight on Dec. 14 and Agent Brian Terry was wrapping up his final shift before vacation. Soon, he would be headed home to Michigan to spend Christmas with his family.
His gifts were already wrapped and in the mail.
Agent Terry would follow, but in a casket. The Border Patrol agent was killed that night during a shootout with Mexican bandits, 18 miles north of the border.
There is much to turn your stomach in the way that Agent Terry died. That it happened even as our leaders were proclaiming the border "as secure now as it's ever been". That our guys were initially firing bean bags while the bad guys were shooting assault weapons.
