Texas Self-Defense: Homeowner shoots suspected intruder during home invasion :: 08/01/2019

SAN ANTONIO — Police said a suspected intruder was shot during a home invasion on the Southwest Side on Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at a home along Five Palms Drive, near Old Pearsall Road.

Late Wednesday evening, we met with a neighbor that witnessed the incident. The neighbor, wanted to keep her identity anonymous to keep herself safe from possible retaliation.

"I saw the man with the gun, and I went down," said the neighbor. "I didn't want him to see me."

According to investigators, the homeowner stated he was asleep when he heard someone was trying to break into his home. He gave the intruder a verbal warning before opening fire.

"While he was sleeping, he heard someone prying on some plywood that was covering up a hole in the house," said a San Antonio police officer. "Right now, we're investigating an attempted burglary."

The injured suspect, a 19-year-old man, was taken to a hospital. The homeowner, who told police he has experienced a few home burglaries over the last few weeks, will not be charged.

"That's the only way they're going to keep them out," said a neighbor. "Like that. I hate to say it. That's what they're going to get."

According to SAPD records we obtained, the home from Wednesday's incident has been visited by SAPD 10 times so far this year. Eight of those calls involved burglaries.
