Texas Self-Defense: Fort Worth Grandmother Pulls Gun To Defend Herself From Knife-Wielding Thug :: 04/22/2015

A 74-year-old Forth Worth grandmother was trying to do a good deed when she gave directions to a young man who approached her minivan in front of a doctor’s officer, asking for help.

When the young hoodlum pulled a knife on her and held it to her throat demanding money, however, she decided that the time for being nice was over:

Jewell Turner, 74, told NBC 5 she was waiting in her minivan outside of her doctor’s office, near the corner of West Magnolia Avenue and 6th Avenue in the city’s Near South Side, when a man tapped on the glass of her driver’s side window.

Turner said she rolled down the window when the man said he needed directions.

“He stood there and we talked for a while, [him] just asking for directions and me giving them to him,” Turner recalled. “Never thought that when I turned my head that that young man would stick a knife to my throat.”

Turner first thought about going for a pocket knife that belonged to her late husband, but then remembered she had something that was more of an equalizer.

“I seen the gun laying there. And I figured that would work better than the knife,” Turner said. “I just reached down, got the gun and turned around and pointed it to his face. And I told him, I said, ‘You back off, or I’ll blow your head off.’ And his eyes got big and he just backed up and he took off walking down the street like nothing happened.”

This was a good example of typical defensive gun use, where the mere presence or display of a firearm ended the threat of criminal action. Such non-firing defensive gun uses occur from 500,000 to 3+ million times a year, the vast majority of which never result in a police report, much less a media story of any kind.
