Tennessee Self-Defense: One man killed in Tuesday morning 'self-defense' shooting in Brownsville :: 12/19/2019

One man died in a domestic Brownsville shooting Tuesday morning that has since been ruled an act of self-defense.

Brownsville police received a 911 call about 9 a.m. Tuesday reporting that one person had been shot at a residence on the 500 block of Robin Street, according to Brownsville Assistant Police Chief Kelvin Evans.

Officers found 33-year-old Xavier Morris, who had a single gunshot wound to the chest, lying in a hallway inside the home. An officer performed chest compressions, but Morris was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators identified 32-year-old Michael Shutes, Jr. as a suspect in the shooting, Evans said. Shutes fled the scene after the shooting but turned himself in to investigators about an hour after the incident.

"So far, what we've gathered is it was an ongoing issue between Michael Shutes and Xavier [Morris] that escalated," Evans said.

After investigators questioned Shutes, the District Attorney's Office ruled the shooting and act of self-defense.

Shutes will not face charges.

Officers recovered a 9 mm handgun believed to be connected to the incident from a nearby property.

About three other people were inside the residence at the time of the shooting, Evans said. No one else was injured.
