Tennessee Self-Defense Shooting: Homeowner shoots man after assault at his home :: 09/15/2014

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. - An Old Hickory man shot another man who reportedly assaulted him at his home.  It happened at 9:15 p.m. Friday night at a home in the 4000 block of Church Street.

Police told News 2 the incident started when the victim, Joshua Dobson, got into an argument over the phone with his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, 29-year-old Michael Young.

The pair was fighting over the well-being of the child that Young has with Dobson's girlfriend.

Authorities said Dobson warned Young not to come to his home, but he showed up anyway with a man named Troy Weiss.

The victim, who came to the door with a pistol, was reportedly assaulted after he told the men to leave. He said he was in fear of his safety, so he fired his weapon, hitting Weiss in the leg and chest.

Dobson then used a medical kit from inside his home to render aid to Weiss before driving him to get medical attention.

Weiss was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

Dobson was treated for a minor gash on his head.

Young and Weiss are both facing charges for aggravated assault for the incident.
