South Carolina Self-Defense: No charges yet after shooting at North Charleston bar :: 05/14/2016

Police say a shooter will not yet be charged after acting in self-defense when he fired several rounds from his handgun and struck a victim outside of a North Charleston bar early Saturday morning.

Spencer Pryor, a spokesperson with the North Charleston Police Department, said police have used a statement from the shooter, or subject, and video evidence to make the determination.

The incident began with a verbal altercation at Willie’s Bar, located at 7880 Dorchester Road.

The victim approached the subject and pulled a gun on him, prompting the subject to leave the bar and go to his vehicle to avoid further confrontation, according to Pryor.

Pryor stated that once the subject entered his vehicle, the victim and another unknown person approached the subject’s car and the victim again showed his weapon and began to pull it.

According to Pryor, the subject was “fearing for his life” when he pulled out his own handgun and fired several rounds at the victim, striking him.

Police arrived at the scene around 2 a.m. The subject was taken into custody and the victim was sent to the hospital, according to Pryor.

No charges were made but the incident is still under investigation.

This is not the first time gunfire has been exchanged outside the Dorchester Road bar.

In 2014, at least three people were wounded after a disturbance inside the men’s restroom escalated.
