South Carolina Self-Defense: Gun-toting customers stop attack at SC car dealership, report says :: 01/16/2018

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A pair of legally armed customers at a car dealership stopped an attack in which a man threatened to kill employees and smashed vehicles with a pipe wrench, according to the Associated Press and a report in The State newspaper.

Aaron Hayes,16th Circuit assistant solicitor, said Alonzo Seegars was unhappy with the service at a car dealership in Fort Mill, and armed himself with a pipe wrench.

The State reported that Seegars threatened to kill a female employee and smashed three vehicles with the wrench Dec. 21 before two customers with concealed carry permits intervened and held him at gunpoint until deputies arrived.

York County deputies used a stun gun and then tackled Seegars, who suffered a broken leg,the report says.

The report says Seegars was in court Friday for a bond hearing. Seegars was not taken to jail, but hospitalized for physical and mental health reasons. He was served warrants Jan. 2 on charges of attempted murder, assault and battery and breach of peace in an aggravated nature.

An employee testified at Seegars’ bond hearing that the suspect had previously threatened people at the dealership, and on Dec. 21, backed him into a corner with the pipe wrench before a profanity-laced tirade of death threats and smashed cars, The State reported.

Seegars is being held with bond set at $25,000.
