Pennsylvania Self-Defense: Home intruder stopped by armed resident, arrested :: 09/20/2016

An armed Mount Joy Township resident recently stopped an unwanted who broke into their home.

Police have charged Derek Robert Kelchner, 31, no fixed address, after he reportedly entered a home on Sager Lane in Mount Joy Township, only to be confronted at gunpoint by a resident of the home. The incident happened at around 8:20 p.m. Sept. 17, police said.

After hearing an alarm activated by Kelchner entering the home through a basement door, the resident called police and got the handgun. Kelchner left the home when the resident confronted him with the gun and told him to leave, police said.

The resident provided a description of the intruder and police found Kelchner a short distance from the crime scene. He was identified by the resident and taken to Lancaster County Prison where he is being held on $40,000 bail.

Kelchner is charged with a felony count of criminal trespassing, a misdemeanor count of false identification, and a summary offence for public drunkenness. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Sept. 28.
