Oregon Self-Defense: DA: North Bend man murdered estranged wife, attempted to kill 3 others in shooting :: 11/15/2018

NORTH BEND, Ore. - A man murdered his estranged wife and attempted to kill three others in a shooting Tuesday night, exchanging gunfire with one of the neighbors and shooting at another as they attempted to stop the suspect from leaving the scene, the district attorney in Coos County says.

The district attorney filed a charge of Murder, three counts of Attempted Murder and one count of Assault against 54-year-old Glen Frank Mason IV.

Mason is accused of shooting and killing Leslie Mason, his estranged wife; and shooting and injuring his step-daughter, Lindsay Pease. Pease is Mason's biological daughter.

After emergency surgery at Bay Area Hospital, Pease was sent to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland where she is considered "fairly stable," district attorney Paul Frasier said.

The Murder charge related to Leslie Mason's death.

The Assault charge and one of the Attempted Murder charges allege Mason shot Pease, according to the criminal information filed by the DA.

The two other Attempted Murder charges involve the neighbors who tried to stop Glen Mason from leaving, Frasier said.

"Apparently Mr. Mason opened fire on both neighbors, or fired in their direction. The one neighbor in self-defense fired back," district attorney Paul Frasier said. "What we're finding this morning in daylight is we've got a large outdoor scene. We're finding bullet strikes in buildings and houses, shell cases and spent bullets on the ground."

Frasier declined to say which neighbor fired at Mason in self-defense.

Police responded to a Chester Street home in North Bend at 10:14 p.m. after multiple 911 calls reporting screaming and gunshots.

Officers found Leslie Mason dead from multiple gunshot wounds, Frasier said.

Pease was alive but suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Frasier said.

Frasier said that Pease's three children - ages 10, 7 and 16 months - were found at the scene. Two were outside the home; one was inside the house. Frasier said the children were not injured. It is not yet known what the children witnessed Tuesday night.

Neighbors saw Glen Mason leaving the area and attempted to stop him, Fraiser said. Witnesses say Mason shot in their direction, and one of the neighbors returned fire.

Police caught up to Mason at a residence on Ridge Road about 7 miles away.

Officers spent 30 minutes talking Mason out of the house. Investigators have since searched the house and the vehicle he was driving.
