Ohio Self-Defense: Man shoots attacker in self-defense in Cleveland's Slavic Village neighborhood, police say :: 01/29/2020

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A 24-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound after he attacked another man on the street Tuesday afternoon in the city’s Slavic Village neighborhood, police said.

Cleveland police made no arrests in the case, but surveillance video showed that the injured 24-year-old man sparked the incident when he attacked the shooter from behind, according to police. Fifteen gunshots were fired in two separate rounds of shooting.

The incident happened about 3 p.m. on Broadway Avenue and East 65th Street. The 24-year-old jumped out of an SUV and punched the other man in the face from behind, according to police.

The two men wrestled to the ground. A woman got out of the SUV and kicked the other man while he was on the ground, according to police.

The man who got jumped fired several shots at the 24-year-old man in self-defense, hitting him in the arm, according to police. He walked away, but the 24-year-old man and woman got back in the SUV and followed him, according to police.

The man opened fire on the SUV. The SUV reversed course and drove in the opposite direction, while the gunman got in a car and sped away. Police have not identified the man firing the shots.

The 24-year-old man ended up in a doorway of a cellphone store in a strip mall on Broadway Avenue. Paramedics took him to University Hospitals for treatment.

The man told police at the hospital that he was too drunk to remember what prompted the shooting. He added that if he did attack someone, “it’s because he did something to me," according to police reports.
