Ohio Self-Defense: Garfield Heights store employee thwarts robbery by shooting at armed man :: 11/18/2016

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio – A Garfield Heights convenience store employee thwarted a robbery by shooting at an armed man, police said.

No one was hurt during the Wednesday incident at Dairy Mart on Turney Road, according to a police report.

Detectives have not made any arrests. The robber could not be identified because he covered his face with a white ski mask, the report says.

The robber entered the store just before 10:30 p.m. and pointed a gun at the employee. But the employee pulled out his own gun and fired once, he told police.

The employee tripped as he fired and his shot hit the ceiling. The robber ran from the store without taking anything.

Another employee was in a back room at the time but was wearing headphones and did not hear anything, she told police.

Officers later spotted a man matching the robber's description on East 128th Street, but he ran off before the officers could catch him, the report says.

The store could not provide surveillance video of the incident, the report says.
