CLEVELAND — Cleveland police are investigating after a man shot and killed a dog after it attacked his pregnant girlfriend while she was taking it on a walk Saturday evening.

Around 6:44 p.m., officers responded to the 9200 block of Rosalind Avenue after receiving a call that a woman had been attacked by a pit bull, police said.

Once on scene, officers found that a 31-year-old woman was being transported by EMS to University Hospitals in serious condition and saw the dog lying lifeless in the street, according to police.

The woman’s boyfriend told police that he had shot and killed the dog after we witnessed it attack his girlfriend, police said.

The man told officers that he was arriving home and witnessed his girlfriend across the street walking the dog when it turned and attacked her. He said that she kept trying to push the dog off but it continued to attack. The man said he then ran over and tried to stop the dog but couldn’t, so he ran inside to grab a firearm that belonged to his girlfriend and shot and killed the dog, according to police.

Police visited the woman in the hospital and she told officers that she had never had any issues with the dog being aggressive before and she couldn’t understand why the attack had happened, police said.

The woman suffered lacerations and puncture wounds to both of her arms, legs and hands and another to her abdomen, according to police.
