New York Self-Defense: Man shot dead by homeowner identified as a Utica resident :: 12/10/2016

ILION, NY - Police in Herkimer County have identified a man shot dead by a homeowner during a robbery as a 24-year-old Utica man.

Dasean E. Chastine of Utica was killed on Wednesday when a homeowner confronted him and shot him during a home invasion on Richfield Street in the village of Ilion, the Ilion Police Department announced Friday. Chastine was found dead in the driveway of the home, police said.

Police said James M. Richards shot Chastine as he attempted to rob Richard's home. Police have said the suspect was armed.

Richards appears to have shot the suspect in self-defense, police said.

Richards has been treated and released after suffering a head injury and other injuries to his legs and arms during the incident, police said.

Ilion police have asked anyone who may have seen any suspicious person or vehicles within the area of Richfield Street, Columbia Parkway, Monroe Street, East River Drive, Frederick Street, and upper Otsego Street on Wednesday to call (315) 894-9911.

Because the investigation is continuing, police said they can't release any more details on the specifics of the incident.
