New Mexico Self-Defense: Suspect fatally shot during store robbery :: 02/01/2016

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The owner of a northeast Albuquerque coin shop fatally shot one of at least two people who tried to rob his store and attacked him Saturday afternoon, police said.

The man who was shot was dropped off at a hospital and had gold coins and bars falling out of his pockets while he was being treated, said officer Daren DeAguero of the Albuquerque Police Department.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. when at least two suspects attempted to rob Jim Coad Rare Coins in the 3100 block of Eubank NE, near Candelaria, and attacked the shop owner with some type of blunt object, DeAguero said.

The shop owner shot one of the suspects. Some witnesses told police that the suspect was shot in the neck, while others said the back, DeAguero said.

“There’s chaos. We can hear people screaming in the background,” DeAguero said of the original 911 call. “Somebody had been shot. And there’s blood everywhere.”

The suspects left in a vehicle, and the shot man was dropped off at Lovelace Women’s Hospital. He died later in the day, DeAguero said.

The owner was also taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police didn’t identify the owner or any of the suspects on Saturday.
