Police in Hamilton Township, New Jersey are investigating an early morning shooting that left a man dead Saturday morning.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting on the unit block of Vicki Court around 4:00 a.m.

When officers arrived on scene, they found Dominic Neal,  lying near the front steps of the home, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Neal was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center's Fuld Campus, where he was pronounced dead just before 9:00 a.m.

Police spoke to the resident of the home, an off duty corrections officers, who said Neal approached him early that morning as he went out to smoke on his front porch.

The resident tells police Neal approached him wearing a black hoodie with the hood up, andhis head down, and reached for his waistband as he reached for the door with his other hand. The resident said he shouted for Neal to stop, then fired three or four shots through the glass storm door of his home, striking Neal once.

Police say the resident's girlfriend, who was inside the home at the time of the shooting, has a restraining order against Neal, connected to a domestic violence incident that prevented him from contacting her.

No charged have been filed at this time.

The incident remains under investigation.
