Nebraska Self-Defense: House sitter shoots intruder inside La Vista home, police say :: 08/06/2016

LA VISTA, Neb. —Police say an intruder was shot after trying to break into a home early Saturday morning.

It happened around 2:15 a.m. near Josephine and 70th Streets.

A man and woman told police they were house-sitting when they woke up to a man kicking in the door of the bedroom.

According to La Vista police, the suspect, 26-year-old Darrick Minner, was an ex-boyfriend of the homeowner.

One of the house sitters, 19-year-old Zachary Schmid, fired and struck Minner, police said.

Minner fled and was soon found along the 8000 block of 67th Street.

Medics took him to Nebraska Medicine, where at last check, he was undergoing surgery. Police said he is expected to survive.

Schmid was questioned and released.

There’s no word yet on charges for Minner.
