Nebraska Self-Defense Shooting-73 Year Old Homeowner Stops Home Invasion With Taurus .380 Handgun :: 08/28/2014

A homeowner who is 73 year old was forced to use a firearm to defend himself and his home this week.

The elderly man grabbed his Taurus .380 ACP pistol when he heard someone trying to break in. The local news report describe the gun as legally registered, however, Nebraska has no gun registration laws.

According to Omaha.com,

And halfway down the stairs he spotted a man entering his home through a broken front picture window. Peering about 15 feet from the steps into the living room lighted only by a small table lamp, Jackson said he fired one round that grazed the torso of the man.

The man stepped back outside through the window and waited on the porch for police to arrive. Jackson said the man was bleeding from the gunshot wound and cuts from the broken glass.

“I’m glad I didn’t kill the guy,’’ Jackson said about the break-in that occurred about 1:45 a.m. at his home near 34th and Cuming Streets. “But I did shoot to stop him.’’

Jackson said he was on the second level of the home he has lived in for 17 years, along with his wife, Henrietta, 69, a 44-year-old daughter and a 20-year-old grandson, when the man busted his way in.

“We’re thinking drugs or something,’’ said Jackson. “He had to have been on something. He was definitely inebriated.’’

The home next door to the east has been undergoing renovations over the summer, Jackson said, and several break-ins have occurred there. Maybe the man mistakenly believed he was breaking into that home, he said.

Jackson said he and his family members gave statements to police, who haven’t charged anyone in the break-in and shooting, and he praised officers’ professionalism while investigating the case.
