I’m glad I don’t run Liberty Safe this week.
I don’t remember any gun safe manufacturer having this bad of a week ever before, and it’s entirely of their own making. Between Ranjit and myself, we’ve talked a fair bit about the company and in fairness to them, they’ve made changes. More than one.
However, they’ve also managed to shine a spotlight on themselves as a company, which means that a lot of people are looking at them that otherwise might not bother.
See, when people buy any product that is part of the firearm industry, be it a gun or a safe, they like to think they’re not just investing in a piece of hardware, but in a company that doesn’t hate them.
Yet it seems that Liberty Safe might not be such a company.
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk used a post on X to report that FEC filings show Liberty Safe’s parent company donated over $400,000 to gun-control Democrats.
Kirk posted:
Liberty Safe was sold to Monomoy Capital Partners in 2021, a liberal East Coast investment firm. I pulled the FEC reports on the company and found approximately $400,000 over the last 10 cycles of max donations to Democrats like: Raphael Warnock in GA John Fetterman in PA Mandela Barnes in WI Mark Kelly in AZ.
He added, “Liberty Safe’s current CEO, Justin Hillenbrand, was a founding partner of Monomoy and donated $4,600 to Obama for America.”
Now, did this have anything at all to do with Liberty Safe’s decision to provide the access code to police for someone accused of participating in the January 6th situation at the Capitol? Who knows? They’re not going to admit it, that’s for sure.
What we do know, though, is that if you bought a Liberty Safe, you may have helped contribute to people who will fund anti-gun voices and work to take away your Second Amendment rights.
Now, the idea of an anti-gun person working in some part of a firearm-related industry isn’t that unheard of. I once spoke with the CEO of a fairly well-known gun manufacturer–not one of the household names, but gun folks are generally familiar with them–and he remarked to me about how many anti-gunners ran gun companies.
I have no reason to doubt him. I can just say that they’re generally smart enough not to get caught being that anti-gun.
Liberty Safe, however, managed to screw the pooch royally and now people are looking and finding out that while they might give lip service to supporting gun rights, the people who own the company are actively funding anti-gun politicians.
It would be bad enough if this were just motivated by support for mandatory storage laws. Rent-seeking behavior like that is disgusting, but at least I can understand it.
Funding people who will, if given the opportunity, essentially end private gun ownership and thus negate the need for anyone to own a gun safe seems…unwise. At least from a business standpoint if nothing else.
So I’m not going to tell you not to buy a Liberty Safe. I will tell you to at least consider what you’re doing before you buy one.
