Minnesota Self-Defense: Shooting at City Hall - Councilman Draws His Concealed Gun and Covers Colleagues :: 01/27/2015

A shooting took place during a city council meeting in New Hope, MN last night. According to local media reports:

Just after swearing in two new police officers at a New Hope City Council meeting Monday night, a man outside council chambers opened fire with a gun on police officers, hitting and injuring two of them.

Police officers at the scene returned fire and killed the adult male suspect, according to Hennepin County Chief Deputy Mike Carlson. The suspect’s name was not released. He was said to have used “a long gun” in the attack, as opposed to a handgun.

The two injured officers, whose names were not given, are in good condition in a hospital, Carlson said in a brief talk with media shortly before 10 p.m. at a nearby shopping center.

One city councilman, identified as John Elder, who also works as public information officer of the Minneapolis Police Department, can be seen on surveillance footage drawing a concealed firearm and covering his fellow council members.

Fortunately, officers were able to neutralize the threat before the suspect reached the council.
