Michigan Self-Defense: Homeowner shoots suspect in Augusta Township break-in :: 07/01/2019

AUGUSTA TWP., MI – A homeowner shot a 24-year-old suspect in a home invasion incident last month, according to police.

The suspect had previously performed contracting work on the home, police said.

Police and rescue crews responded to the shooting in the early morning hours of June 15 at a home on McKean Road near Judd Road, according to Michigan State Police.

Troopers discovered the homeowner, 63, had shot an intruder two times with a handgun shortly after the suspect forced his way into the home, police said.

The suspect was taken to an Ann Arbor area hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released, police said.

The suspect knew the homeowner, having performed contract work on the home, and targeted the residence specifically, police said.

Due to the nature of the break in, police do not believe there is any further danger to the public, police said.

Investigators submitted the case to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review and charges, but prosecutors said they had not yet received the request.

The suspect remains free, recovering from his injuries, according to police.
