Michigan Self-Defense: Gunfire breaks out during Christmas Eve robbery at Eastpointe cellphone store :: 12/24/2019

A gunman looking to rob a cellphone store in Eastpointe on Christmas Eve got more than he bargained before when an employee pulled out his own gun and and fired the weapon, according to police.

Authorities do not believe the robber was struck by the gunfire, Eastpointe police said in a Facebook post late Tuesday. Police said the incident took place about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Cricket Wireless store at 20808 Gratiot Avenue at Eight Mile Road.

A preliminary investigation shows the gunman walked into the store and robbed a worker who was on duty. The worker was armed and fired a shot at the robber.

Investigators say it does not appear the robber was struck by the gunfire. He fled out the door, escaping with a cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The post did not state whether the employee had a license to carry the gun.

Police described the robber as a black male in his early 20s, wearing glasses, an Army hoodie and black pants. He was armed with what was described as a semiautomatic handgun.

More information will be released as it becomes available, police said in the release.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call the Eastpointe Police Department at 586-445-5100, ext. 1
