An early morning altercation between a woman, her ex-boyfriend and her current boyfriend ended with one man dead and the other injured after the ex-boyfriend attempted to forcefully take the woman at gunpoint from the River Ridge, Louisiana, home Sunday.
Authorities have referred to the incident as a violent domestic situation, which started just after 4 a.m. in the New Orleans suburb. Local media reported that Karen Collins, 35, and her current boyfriend, Robert Esteves, 32, returned to Esteves’ home after attending a Christmas party and went to bed.
However, the couple awakened after Bobby Edler, 44, broke into the home and entered the bedroom where the couple was sleeping. Edler ordered them out of the bed and forced Collins to the front door at gunpoint. However, Esteves was able to retrieve a shotgun and fired at Edler from a second-floor foyer inside the home.
While Edler’s attention was turned to Esteves, Collins was then able to break free and run to a neighbor’s house where she called 911.
Meanwhile, an exchange of gunfire occurred between Edler and Esteves. Esteves fired at least two shots, but it’s unknown how many shots were fired by Edler.
When responding officers arrived at the home, they found Edler lying just inside the front door. He was surrounded by a pool of blood and pronounced dead at the scene.
Esteves was shot once in the arm during the altercation and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His injury was believed to be non-life threatening. Collins, although shaken up, was not physically injured during the incident.
Authorities did not say whether there were prior domestic disputes between Collins and Edler or whether there were any protective orders in place.
Collins and Esteves were both questioned by the police, but charges have not been filed at this time, as it appears Esteves acted in self defense. However, the investigation is still ongoing.
