Louisiana Self-Defense: Abbeville store owner shoots back at armed assailant, hospitalizes one suspect :: 11/18/2016

ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) – An altercation in front of a convenience store in Abbeville lead to a shooting Tuesday night and friends and family of the owner say he hates what happened, but he had to protect his family.

“He did not have a choice. My brother is very, very remorseful this is a life we value human life,” said Carol Buchannan, the store owner’s sister.

Just before 10:00 Tuesday night, Abbeville Police responded to shots being fired in the 400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near Pa Paw’s convenience store.

“As the officers responded they located a black male subject in the roadway. Turns out to be that this person is Mr. Steven Davenport who is the alleged suspect,” said Lt. David Hardy.

Lt. David Hardy said Davenport was seeking revenge on the store owner’s son.

“It all turned out to be in reference to girls fighting previously. Mr. Davenport went to the store earlier that day where he was advised not to return. He told him he’d be back at closing time which was right around ten o’clock.”

The owner’s sister Carol Buchanan said Davenport pulled his gun and began firing leaving her brother no choice but to shoot in self-defense.

“He was protecting himself. This guy opened fire on him what could he do?”

Lt. Hardy said a second suspect, 20-year-old Waynesha Briggs, turned herself in around 12:30 pm Wednesday.

“Miss. Briggs, according to all the witnesses, picked up the firearm used by Davenport and took off running with it. That gun was located underneath her residence.”

Charles Dozier lives in the area. He said it’s unfortunate that this happened.

“He’s a business person. He’s not for all that, unless he had to, that’s the only thing I could see. He had to do what he had to do.”

Davenport is charged with second-degree attempted murder.

Briggs is charged with obstruction of justice.
