Kentucky Self-Defense: Resident shoots man trying to break into home, police says :: 07/16/2016

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —A homeowner shot a man who he said was breaking into his house on Friday.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 a.m. on East Ashland Avenue in the Beechmont neighborhood.

A man, woman and child were in the house when they said two men tried to break in.

Police were called to the house after the homeowner said he shot one of two men who were trying to break in. The other man ran.

A neighbor said he heard yelling.

"I wasn't going to go check it out because you don't know, but I called 911 to let them know what was going on, and apparently there had already been a call or two," B.J. Lovins said.

"(I was) disgusted on another level that I felt violated. It was on my street, in my neighborhood, and it could have been me when I was just outside moments earlier," said a neighbor who did not want to be identified.

Another neighbor called police earlier in the week. She asked not to be identified because she's scared of retaliation.

"(There were) two unsavory characters walking around casing out people's houses while they're at work," the neighbor said.

She thinks it was the same two men.

"Here it is in the same week, and now a homeowner had to do what the police couldn't do," the neighbor said.

Neighbors said they don't blame the homeowner for pulling the trigger.

"He's not dead. The house is protected. He is incapacitated. I can't say anything negative about that. He was protecting his home, which he had every reason to believe that was going to be dangerous," Lovins said.

The family members who were inside the house did not want to talk.

Louisville Metro Police Department's Major Crimes Unit is investigating.

Police said the man who was shot is expected to survive.

They have not given a description of the other man.
