Iowa Self-Defense: Police: Woman shoots ex-boyfriend outside Kum & Go :: 05/17/2017

A Des Moines woman who shot her ex-boyfriend in his knee outside a gas station Tuesday night told police she was shooting in self defense.

At about 11:45 p.m., the woman called police to report that she had shot her ex-boyfriend outside Kum & Go, 2110 Guthrie Ave., according to a Des Moines police report.

She told police her ex-boyfriend had tried to run her over with his vehicle, so she fired the gun in self defense, according to the report.

A police officer later went to the man's home, where the man was found with a gunshot wound to his knee, according to the report. The officer called medics, and the man was later transported to a hospital.

The man told police that he and his ex-girlfriend had been arguing "off and on all day," according to the report. The argument reportedly started over disagreement about which one of them owned their children's photos.

The man said his ex-girlfriend had followed to the Kum & Go, where she shot him, according to the report.

She claimed he had run over her foot with his car, but police found no evidence of an injury from that, according to the report.

But officers did see that the woman's hand was bruised, and she told police it was because the man had roughly pulled a child's car seat away from her grip, and her hand got caught on it, according to the report.

Police found a bullet hole in the gunshot victim's car door.

Neither the man nor woman had been charged in this case as of Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting remains under investigation.
