Illinois Self-Defense: Video shows fatal shooting at suburban gas station :: 05/11/2017

Elmwood Park police have released a surveillance video that shows an April 8 shootout at a gas station that led to the death of a 43-year-old Chicago man. Police released the video after a Freedom of Information Act request from the Pioneer Press.

Last month, police announced that no one would face charges after Ronald Morales, 43, was shot multiple times at a BP gas station at 7450 W. Grand Ave., Elmwood Park. Police had said the man who survived the shootout acted in self-defense.

The video shows the scene police had previously described at the gas station before and during the shootout. Police had said that at 4:52 p.m. April 8, Morales exited the convenience store area of the gas station and made eye contact with a man who was pumping gas into his vehicle. Police said that Morales walked to his vehicle and retrieved his gun. By then, the man who had been pumping gas was back in his vehicle, police said, but when the man saw Morales walking toward him with a gun, the man felt he was in danger and exited his vehicle armed with his own gun, and the men exchanged gunfire.

At the time, police had credited the gas station's "state-of-the art camera system" with providing them clear footage of the afternoon of the shootout that allowed them to quickly corroborate information they gathered from eyewitnesses on the scene, the man who survived the shootout and the vehicle occupants.
