Update: 4:14 p.m. DECATUR – A resident who shot three men on Saturday night did so in self-defense, police said Monday.
Decatur police Sgt. Chris Copeland said the incident occurred at about 6:40 p.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of North Woodford St. When police arrived at the nearby intersection of Garfield Avenue and Charles Street, they found the three men, aged 18, 23 and 28, all suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
The three males went to the 32-year-old shooter's residence after one of them was in an altercation with him a short time earlier, Copeland said. They were armed with a two-by-four piece of lumber.
One of the trio made a motion toward his waistband, apparently to imply that he had a firearm.
The resident opened fire, striking all three of them.
He was arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm without a valid Firearm Owners ID card. The shooter was issued a notice to appear in court on that charge.
The incident occurred in the resident's backyard.
The police anticipate more arrests will be made in the case, Copeland said.
DECATUR — Detectives were working into the night Sunday after three Decatur men were shot.
Initial police reports said the gunfire erupted around 7 p.m in the 2000 block of North Woodford Street. All three men were believed to have suffered relatively minor wounds at first but one of the victim's injuries was later described by the hospital as more serious.
