Georgia Self-Defense: Homeowner Exchanges '30 To 40 Shots' With Pair Of Burglars :: 03/05/2015

According to recent reports, two would-be robbers met the business end of their victim’s firearm during a break-in this week. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution indicated the resident heard persistent knocking on his front door and, upon realizing the individuals outside were not invited, declined to open the door for them.

“He said a lady knocked first,” one neighbor explained in an interview. “Then after he didn’t go to the door, they kicked the door in [and] came in his house.”

The witness stated she was about to take a nap at the time of the incident, noting the sound of gunshots quickly followed.

“As soon as I laid down,” the neighbor recalled, “I heard about 30 to 40 shots.”

Neighbor Lenward Reeves explained that he has been victimized by burglars in the past and supports his neighbor’s act of self-defense.

“I’m glad he’s OK,” Reeves said. “One has to be careful and protect yourself. That’s something you have to do these days.”

The only apparent difference of opinion he has with his neighbor is his weapon of choice.

“I prefer a shotgun myself,” he said. “Pistols are fine, but I own a shotgun.”

At least one intruder, a male, was hit multiple times by bullets, police confirmed, and was recovered by authorities a short time later in a wooded area adjacent to the Fulton County, Ga., home. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The homeowner spoke to WXIA about the ordeal, explaining that the man and woman on his front porch saw him as he approached, explaining he immediately retrieved his 9-mm handgun and returned.

As they retreated toward their vehicle, he explained that the couple began firing back at him. Reports indicate the injured man and his partner attempted to drive away but crashed into a nearby hedge. From there, the two attempted to escape on foot.

Police continued to look for at least one additional suspect as of the latest reports available.
