Florida Self-Defense: Police - homeless woman's fatal shooting was self-defense :: 06/11/2016

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Police say a homeless woman was defending herself when she fatally shot a man at a homeless camp in Gainesville.

A Gainesville Police Department report says the woman called 911 Thursday evening, and the dispatcher heard her yelling "get off me" before the line disconnected.

When the dispatcher called back, police say a woman answered and said she'd shot someone. Police did not identify the 54-year-old because she is a domestic violence victim.

Responding officers say they found her covered in blood, with a gun in her purse.

At the campsite, police say they found 41-year-old Michael J. Wilson with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest.

Police say the woman's injuries were defensive and that based on her statement and witness interviews, they believe she was acting in self-defense.
