Florida Self-Defense: Homeowner shoots and kills alleged attempted burglar :: 08/01/2017

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — An alleged intruder was shot dead by a resident early Sunday at the Raintree Apartments South of Clermont.

Lake County Sheriff Sgt. Fred Jones said a group of individuals came to the front door of the tenant around 3 a.m. They were at the front door of the unit, on Raintree Bend, in the Four Corners area.

As the four people at the door tried to enter the apartment, the resident opened the door slightly, which was secured by a chain to keep it from opening all the way. During the incident, the occupant shot one of the suspects, who was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The other three people involved were located at another location. Detectives are interviewing them, to determine what happened, and to see if any arrests should be made.

At this early stage of the investigation, Sgt. Jones said it appears the resident was defending his apartment, which he shares with his wife and children. Jones is describing the incident as an armed burglary.

The three people being questioned are described as persons of interest.
