Florida Self-Defense: Home intruder shot and killed by homeowner in Ferry Pass :: 07/31/2019

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WEAR-TV) — A man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning after breaking into a home on Lawton Street off of Olive Road in Ferry Pass. The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

We spoke to the homeowner, who does not want to be identified, he said the intruder made his way through a bedroom window. He showed us the shattered window.

“He left through my front door and came through the bedroom window, knocked everything around and slapped me, woke me up. He said something about something on fire then left out the front door. A few minutes later I heard him come back through so I went to the window and grabbed my pistol and that was over with,” the homeowner described.

The homeowner had shot the man, he said he didn’t want to kill the guy and was intending to fire a warning shot. He said the man later died at the hospital.

He said he realized the intruder was someone he’s dealt with before. He said about two years ago the man had been arrested for breaking into his home. The man’s identity has not yet been released so we could not confirm his criminal history.

The homeowner said he feels confident he did what he had to in self-defense.

“You're scared for your life you do what you got to do,” he said.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office are investigating.
