Florida Self-Defense: Deputies: DeLand mother, 76, shoots daughter in self-defense :: 04/24/2020

Volusia County deputies said the daughter was repeatedly beating the mother, who warned her to stop, before shooting her.

A 76-year-old mother shot her daughter in self-defense at her home near DeLand on Thursday afternoon after warning the younger woman to stop beating her, Volusia County deputies said.

The mother will not be charged with shooting her daughter, Julie Edwards, 54, sheriff’s officials said.

Julie Edwards is known to deputies. In February she threatened a black deputy who arrested her for drunk driving by saying she would have the Ku Klux Klan burn crosses on the deputy’s property, according to News-Journal reports.

Paramedics transporting Edwards to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford said the woman had a bullet lodged in her right leg. She was charged with aggravated battery on a person 65 or older.

Edwards will be transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail once she is released from the hospital, the Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to 1554 S. Montgomery St. in DeLand just before 4 p.m. Thursday

At the scene of the shooting, investigators learned from Edwards’ mother that the daughter had returned to the house after an earlier disturbance, took all her clothes off and started hitting her mother in the chest, deputies said.

The mother got her .22 caliber handgun from her room and kept it in her pocket. Edwards resumed hitting her, and the mother warned her if she hit her again, she’d shoot, investigators said.

Edwards hit her again, and her mother shot her in the leg, investigating deputies said.

Sheriff’s officials said Edwards has an extensive criminal history that includes prior arrests for domestic violence battery, aggravated battery and other charges.

Edwards is currently on probation for aggravated battery on a person 65 or older, authorities said.

In February Edwards was arrested for DUI and charged with making threats against a law enforcement officer. In that incident, Edwards made racist remarks to a black deputy and threatened to have the Ku Klux Klan burn crosses on the deputy’s property, her arrest report states.
