Florida Self-Defense: Attempted burglary in Indian River County ends with man shot, deputies say :: 02/02/2018

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Deputies responded to a shooting after a burglary went wrong Thursday evening on the 300 block of 14th Place Southwest, according to the Sheriff's Office. 

One person was injured in the shooting and was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said it received a call of a residential burglary in progress at about 5:45 p.m. 

The owner of the home got a gun and confronted the would-be burglar, the Sheriff's Office said. The burglar was also armed, and the two shot at each other.

Two guns were found by police at the scene.

The suspect was shot twice. He collapsed in the street, where he was later found by emergency personnel. He is expected to survive, the Sheriff's Office said.

The incident is under investigation, and deputies are interviewing the homeowner.
