A Little Torch Key man tried breaking into a Big Pine Key house Tuesday night but was shot dead by the homeowner.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reports that Andrew Grzych, 29, died on the porch of the Oleander Boulevard home he was breaking into around 11 p.m. He was shot by the homeowner, Patrick Wunsch, 31, who was armed with a semi-automatic Glock pistol, said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Deputy Becky Herrin.
Wunsch was not arrested and the State Attorney’s Office has not pressed charges. Herrin said the investigation is ongoing, but this could be a case of self defense.
Wunsch has a jalousie front door, and Grzych was reportedly removing the glass panels when he was shot, Herrin said.
The two men knew each other, and Grzych accused Wunsch of having an affair with his wife, Herrin said. Grzych reportedly came to the house that night to confront Wunsch.
Wunsch’s wife and her parents were inside the house when the shooting happened.
Wunsch called 911 to report he shot a man breaking into his home. When deputies arrived, they found Grzych’s body. They tried unsuccessfully to revive him with CPR and a defibrillator device, as did Monroe County Fire-Rescue Department paramedics who arrived shortly after the deputies.
Sheriff’s Office deputies described Wunsch and his family as “cooperative” when asked about the shooting.
