WACO (September 11, 2014) The Baylor University Student Senate is considering making a historic vote. The senate is discussing whether to allow CHL or licensed concealed weapon carriers to carry their guns on campus.
"You need to keep in mind that the shootings that we read about, Virginia Tech where we hear about 32 people being killed, these shootings don't occur in the parking lot--these shootings occur in the classroom and the current situation is where no ones left to defend when there's one person with a gun and everybody else is sitting there that person is now in control of everybody else's destiny," said Gannon McCahill, Senior Baylor University Student Senator.
As the Texas law stands, CHL holders are only allowed to keep their weapons in a locked car on school parking lots.
With this decision going to vote late next week, all of that could change.
Baylor's response to this proposed idea has been the same as they always have claimed.
In an emailed statement, the University responded saying, "We continue to believe that concealed handguns on our campus would introduce potential challenges to campus safety overall and make more difficult the work of our public safety officers."
However, concealed weapon specialist Johnny Pryce disagreed with the Baylor stance.
"These are the good guys they have their concealed carry license, they've had a background check they don't have any class a, b misdemeanors they're not convicted felons--they're not the one's you have to worry about," said Johnny Pryce.
The idea is going to vote late next week, if the bill is passed the proposal will go to the Baylor Board of Regents for approval.
From there, they will decide if Baylor University will be the first University in the state to allow CHL holders to carry their weapons on school campus.
