Alabama Self-Defense: No charges filed in deadly shooting in Madison County :: 05/06/2020

The man shot to death during a domestic-violence incident in Madison County on Sunday night has been identified as 31-year-old Huntsville man Jonathan Marquis Burrell.

Sheriff’s deputies were called just before midnight to the scene on Gibbon Lane and found Burrell dead. Brent Patterson, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said Burrell’s former fiancé called 911 to report the man showed up at her home and attacked her. When deputies got the scene, the woman had fatally shot Burrell, the authorities said. The woman’s name wasn’t released.

Criminal charges aren’t being filed against the woman, who was questioned at the sheriff’s investigative headquarters, Patterson said. However, once the investigation is finished, the file will be handed over to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office, which could choose to present the case to a grand jury for possible indictment.

The sheriff’s office said Burrell was known to local law enforcement because of a history of domestic violence and violating protection from abuse orders.

Earlier this year, Burrell pleaded guilty to violating a domestic-violence protection order and was sentenced to two years of probation, court records show. He was released from the Madison County jail on Feb. 13 to begin serving probation, records show.

The protection order was issued in 2018 when the woman reported that Burrell had threatened, injured, stalked and stolen from her.

Further information wasn’t immediately available.

This story was updated at 1:24 p.m. to identify the slain man and add information about the domestic-violence history.
