Alabama Self-Defense: Home intruder killed in what police call self-defense in Limestone County :: 11/29/2019

The intruder who died in a shooting Wednesday in Limestone County is identified as 65-year-old David Lee Walton. He lived on Garrett Road in the Belle Mina community,

Investigators say it was a case of self-defense.

They told us the man who lives here walked into his home and saw an intruder just after midnight Wednesday morning. According to police, the intruder tried to attack the resident, so he acted in self-defense and shot him.

Neighbors we spoke with in the community tell us they're shocked this happened in their close-knit area.

"I never thought it would happen like that. Man it shocked me," says Cassius Clay.

Clay has been living in the Belle Mina community for 25 years. He told us he couldn't believe what happened when he woke up Wednesday morning.

"I couldn't believe it. I was shaking. I was shaking like this right here," he says.

Investigators tell us the intruder, David Walton, lives down the street from where he was shot and killed.

Right now, they don't know why he was in this home.

"The resident here had come back to his house, found a man in his residence, who then proceeded to attack him and he shot in what's perceived as self defense," says Stephen Young, spokesperson for the Limestone County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators don't know the condition of the person that was attacked, but he is cooperating with police.

"It's always alarming when someone comes to their house where they expect a pretty good amount of privacy and to be able to relax. It's pretty alarming to come in and find someone there and for that person to proceed to attack you," says Young.

The Limestone County Sheriff's Office says no arrests have been made so far and the person inside was just protecting themselves.

Now, people in the community are on high alert.

"Yeah! They could break in on me," adds Clay.

Investigators are still working to piece together how the two men knew each other. People WAAY 31 spoke with outside the home, tell us everyone in this community is very close...A lot of them are even related.

UPDATE: A Limestone County Sheriff's Office spokesman, Stephen Young, says the incident appears to have been an issue of self defense.

Young says the shooter was a resident who came home and found a man in his home. He says the intruder attacked the resident.

Limestone County Coroner Mike West confirms the shooting victim was 65-year-old David Lee Walton. West says Walton lived on Garrett Road, but not in the home where the shooting happened. He died at the scene at 12:34 a.m.

Walton's father and son live nearby, and he was taken to Reynolds Funeral Home in Decatur.
